Light is made up of tiny
particles called photons. Light travels in the form of packets of photons
called electromagnetic waves which transfer energy. The energy of a photon is
directly proportional to the frequency of light and is equal to Planck’s
constant h, times by the frequency of the light,

 

Solar panels use solar cells to directly convert sunlight into
electricity. The photovoltaic effect is a process that
generates voltage or electric current in a photovoltaic cell when it is exposed
to sunlight. It is this effect that makes solar panels useful, as it is how the
cells within the solar panel convert sunlight to electrical energy.2
The solar cells are composed of two different types of semiconducting material (p-type
and n-type silicon). Each side of the silicon is ‘doped’ to create an electric
field between them. Small pieces of phosphorus
are placed into the top layer which adds extra electrons forming a negatively
charged layer which wants to lose the extra electrons. The bottom layer is
dosed with boron resulitng in fewer electrons, and a positve charge which wnats
to gain electrons. This creates a p-n junction (Semiconductor diode). The
joining of these two types of semiconductors, forms an electric field around
the region.4 You are left with a N-type and a P-type silicon
sides. You get two types of silicon to give it it’s semiconducting properties.
This allows electrons to flow in one direction.

terms of the environment, it is the ability to maintain rates of renewable
resource harvest, pollution creation, and non-renewable resource depletion that
can be continued indefinitely.1 An alternative energy source is
any source of energy that does not use up any of the earths natural resources
and in effect does not cause harm to the enviroment. As the world struggles
with addressing climate change, alternate energy is becoming an increasingly sought
after electricity source. Three examples of alternative
energy sources include Solar, wind & Biomass.
