“If you can, help others; if you cannot, at least do not hurt them.” This was said by a peaceful man , Tenzin Gyatso. The quote means we should always find ways to help others; but if we can’t find it in ourselves to help others because we are down, the least we can do is to not cause harm to others. Tenzin Gyatso is the fourteenth Dalai Lama and leader of the Tibetan Buddhist Community. He wrote many books, traveled the world, and received many awards for his efforts on behalf of world peace and human rights.. Even though, Tenzin Gyatso has broken the commandments and betrayed his faith by violating the precepts of no killing and lying, he is considered a classic hero because of his nonviolent efforts toward the liberation of Tibet and spending his life committed to benefiting human rights and the world peace.First and foremost, Tenzin Gyatso is a peaceful man that has spent his life committed to benefiting humanity and world peace. He has been given many awards, honorary doctorates, and prizes for his lectures about peace, nonviolence, interreligious understanding, universal responsibility and compassion. For his nonviolent struggle toward the liberation of Tibet and his concern for gimbal environmental problems, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.Gyatso efforts toward world peace, environmental harmony, and liberation of oppressed, or ill-treated, people everywhere has made him a symbol of tolerance and respect. Classics heros fight for everyone to be at peace, they try to save the world and its people from being harmed. Tenzin Gyatso does not fight instead, he tries to save everyone from harm and restore peace by making treaties or opening people’s mind to be and do better through lectures. Not to mention, the fact that Tenzin Gyatso has mad many nonviolent efforts toward the liberation of Tibet. Tibet was invaded and taken over by the Chinese. Gyatso was forced to seek asylum, or help, in India. He even visited the Chinese leaders to prevent the from taking over Tibet but was unable to. He proposed a new plan for a negotiated settlement with the Chinese government. This plan it pointed out the first steps in a peaceful solution to reconcile with the Chinese government and end the volatile situation, called the Five Point Peace Plan. The plan was rejected. Gyatso set up a meeting between the Chinese and the Tibetans that would lead to a self-governing democratic political entity for Tibet. Making nonviolent efforts to liberate his country, Tibet, is something a classic hero would do. Classic hero’s make great, positive action attributes to themselves and have little to no casualties as possible. Tenzin Gyatso doesn’t use warfare, so there is no casualties or death to people at all.On the other hand, some may classify him as a tragic hero because he repeatedly broken the commandments and betrayed his faith by violating the precepts of no killing and lying. Gyatso violated the the precepts of no killing by being behind the assassination of many people who disagreed or didn’t obey him. He went further on and violated the precepts of no lying, when he went back on him word by wantonly attacking and defaming his home country and calling on the free world to block the development of his own people and motherland. This doesn’t outweigh the fact that Gyatso, being the symbol of tolerance and respect, has spent most of his life being nonviolent and benefiting humanity. For the most part, Tenzin Gyatso is a classic hero. Although he broke the commandments and betrayed his faith by violating the precepts of no killing and lying, his actions outweigh them. He has proposed many nonviolent efforts toward the liberation of Tibet, like the Five Point Peace Plan. Gyatso has also spent his life committed benefiting human rights and the world peace by giving lectures to persuade people to treat others with kindness.
