How and 50 women back in fall of 2015.

How many of you know who Emma Watson is? Emma Watson is a well-known British actress who became famous by playing the role of Hermione Granger in the franchise Harry Potter. But did you know she was not just an actress, she also is a United Nation Goodwill Ambassador? Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born on April 15th, 1990 in Paris, France. Although she is a very famous actor at a young age, she still pursued her education with all the fame that she had at the time. Watson’s social activism started in 2014 with her trip to Bangladesh and Zambia to promote education for girls. In July 2014, Emma Watson was chosen to be UN Women Goodwill Ambassador and spokesperson for the HeForShe campaign. The HeForShe campaign is to promote gender equality and since then there are 1.3 million people all over the world who have committed to the campaign. “We don’t often talk about men being imprisoned by gender stereotypes but I can see that they are and that when they are free, things will change for women as a natural consequence.” said by Watson in her speech back in 2014 introducing the HeForShe campaign. I think what she is trying to say is that in our society today, we often assume that men should not cry and should always be the strong person and that women are the ones that take care of the family but that is completely wrong. The stereotypes have now caused men to not be able to share their feelings because they will be labeled as a “Girl”,  “Not a Man”, or “Weak”. In the speech that she delivered not only did she inspire millions around the world, she also inspired Malala to call herself a feminist. Lately, in the 2018 Golden Globes, Emma Watson was participating and supporting the #Time’sUp movement along with many other actors by wearing all black. The #Time’sUp movement is against sexual assault and abuse against women, especially female celebrities. This movement began when there were sexual abuse allegations against Harvey Weinstein. With Emma Watson’s impact on Justin Trudeau, he became the youth ambassador for HeForShe and decided to make his cabinet a total of 50 men and 50 women back in fall of 2015. Justin Trudeau tweeted during the OneYoungSummit that it was a pleasure meeting and having her in the parliament. The five-step action plan that I would have to continue on Emma Watson’s legacy mainly focuses on her gender equality work. The first step of the plan is telling teachers to inform students about stigmas on gender and how they are wrong and to try make sure that there are an equal male and female ratio in a group work setting. The second step of my action plan is inviting guest speakers to schools to talk about their experiences of being treated unequally and how it made them feel. Inviting the guest speaker can also teach students to be more open-minded in their workplace. The third step of the plan is starting a trend on any social media platforms to inform everyone that gender inequality should be stopped. The fourth step is to ask students around the school signing a petition for equal pay despite their gender. The fifth step is every year we would have walk or run against gender inequality. The walk is not about raising money, it’s for raising awareness and informing people that there is still this problem in the world even though the problem has improved similar to the terry fox walk or run.In the future, I think that Emma Watson’s work will pay off but if we don’t continue her legacy we will have one less person that wants to change the world for the better and put an end to gender inequality. Without her legacy, people might not be as inspired to become a feminist. The reason I say that is because, in her 2014 speech, she was so inspiring that even Malala became a feminist herself. Have anyone ever said to you, girls only like the color pink and boys only like the color blue or boys should never cry because if they cry they are not strong? These stereotypes are changing how we see the world and how we interact with others. As Watson once said “Both men and women should feel free to be sensitive. Both men and women should feel free to be strong.”. She is saying that not only the woman can share their feelings, men can too and not only men are strong physically and emotionally women can also be strong. We all should do something to remove stereotypes and the invisible wall between male and female because in today’s society we should embrace who we and others are and not follow those stigmas that were created a long time ago to make people feel less than.
